И, как известно, WhatsApp использует протоколы: Noise (атаснейшая штука,
отличнейший выбор), Signal (достойная вещь тоже для IM); FreeBSD и Erlang.
FreeBSD у них держит 2 миллиона TCP соединений на одной машине.

    Linux is a mess. I remember how many issues I had on upgrading
    (Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo). Since my servers are on FreeBSD, I have
    been having only seamless upgrades over 8 years. (No mess with the
    bootloader config, no chaos in /etc)

и ещё про файловые системы и, особенно, btrfs:

    The most pathetic FS ever developed is BTRFS. It’s a shame that they

И вот во всём согласен что самое точное слово для Linux мира это "mess".
И то, что оно ничем не выделяется вообще -- в Linux ничего нет
выдающегося (ну кроме copyleft, за это действительно уважаю). Разве что
из коробки он хорошо будет работать на суперкомпьютерах и утилизировать
многопроцессорные системы. Даже чисто технологически GNU/Linux мир
крайне отстаёт: ZFS, DTrace, LXC его на десять лет позже Jails
появившийся, ад со звуковыми системами.
